Barn Theatre

The history of theatre in Mikháza dates back to the 17-18th century, when, according to the records, the local religious school’s pupils put on stage mostly liturgical drama, in Latin and Hungarian, with the support of the Franciscan monks. In 2002 a few actors initiated a summer festival, the Barn Theatre, hosted in the beginning in a crowded community centre. Later the event was moved to a new site: a completely rebuilt and enlarged barn. The annual cultural event taking place during summer (June – September) offers to the rural communities of the Niraj Valley living far from the cultural centres a buoyant cultural milieu. Its purpose is to preserve and revive the love and need for culture of the rural communities, to preserve traditions.

Roman Festival

The Barn Theatre season culminates with the Barn Theatre’s Days and the Roman Festival, held in the last weekend of June. Concerts, theatre, getting acquainted with the culture of ancient Rome, a time travel: Roman craftsmanship, workshops, Roman gastronomy, gladiator fights, guided tour to the ruins of the local Roman castle, playhouse, film projections.

Hodos has been for centuries a meeting place for the people from the surroundings; it’s market place was the perfect spot for people to hear the latest news and to exchange products and goods. The imperial charter issued by Ferdinand I. of Austria in 19th December 1838 was meant to reinforce the rights and privileges of this important market place. The actual location of the market is a piece of land that was donated by the local landowners, members of the commonage, with a strong sense of civic duty. Mingle in the crowd, be eye- and ear witness of a bargain, watch how the new owners try the horse they would like to buy. Have a seat under the umbrella near the barbecues, have a féldeci (half a decilitre of plum brandy) while waiting for the juicy and hot mici (grilled meat rolls prepared from a mixture of minced sheep and pork with garlic) with mustard. Folk Dances and Music Camp

Collectivization did not affect Sâmbriaş, fact that was beneficial for the preservation of the immaterial cultural heritage: folk dances at songs. Niraj Valley Festival

The largest cultural event in the micro-region attracts each year approximately 8.000-10.000 visitors. The event has a total duration of three days and offers an array of rich cultural and non-formal educational activities (e.g. traditional dances, traditional craftsmanship workshops, traditional gastronomy show, open-air sports and leisure activities for children and young people). An open air exhibition and fair of local products is also held, where farmers, craftsmen from the Niraj Valley exhibit their crops and products.
